How to use the Subway calorie calculator
Choose 6-inch or footlong, then build your sub from the top down: bread, protein, cheese, any extras, your veggies and finally the sauces. The running total and per-item breakdown on the right update the moment you tap — no calculate button needed. Switch the size toggle at any time and every number rescales instantly.
Where Subway calories come from
Subway has a reputation as a healthier fast-food choice, and it can be — but the calories live in three places people underestimate: the bread, the cheese and the sauce. The bread alone is 180 to 240 calories for a 6-inch. Cheese adds 40 to 60. A heavy sauce like mayo or ranch tacks on another 100 or more. The protein and veggies are often the smallest part of the equation, which is why two subs with the same meat can differ by hundreds of calories.
Building a lighter sub
- Choose a leaner protein — turkey, ham or oven-roasted chicken
- Load up on veggies; they're about 5 calories each
- Swap mayo or ranch for mustard, vinegar or sweet onion
- Skip the cheese, or pick a single slice of American
- Order a salad bowl (no bread) to remove 180–240 calories outright
How we estimate the numbers
Every item is listed at its 6-inch value from Subway's published nutrition information. When you select footlong, the calculator doubles your build, since a footlong is essentially two 6-inch portions. Because real subs depend on how generous the sandwich artist is with protein, cheese and sauce, treat the result as a close estimate. To see how your sub fits the rest of your day, pair it with our macro calculator or MyPlate calorie calculator.
