How Mulch Volume Is Calculated
Mulch volume is calculated by multiplying the bed area by the desired depth:
Volume (cu ft) = Length (ft) x Width (ft) x Depth (in) / 12
Divide depth by 12 to convert inches to feet. Then divide total cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards.
Variable Definitions
Bed Length: The longest dimension of the garden bed in feet. Measure along the edge of the bed, not diagonally.
Bed Width: The shorter dimension of the garden bed in feet. For irregularly shaped beds, use the average width.
Depth: How deep you want the mulch layer, in inches. Two to three inches is standard for weed suppression and moisture retention. Going beyond 4 inches wastes material and can harm plants.
Worked Example
You have two flower beds:
- Front bed: 20 ft x 4 ft x 3 inches deep = (20 x 4 x 3) / 12 = 20 cu ft = 0.741 cu yd
- Side bed: 15 ft x 3 ft x 3 inches deep = (15 x 3 x 3) / 12 = 11.25 cu ft = 0.417 cu yd
Total = 31.25 cu ft = 1.157 cu yd
2 cu ft bags: 31.25 / 2 = 16 bags. 3 cu ft bags: 31.25 / 3 = 11 bags.
Edge Cases and Advanced Scenarios
Mulch settling: Fresh mulch settles 20-30% within the first few weeks as it compacts and begins decomposing. If you want a finished depth of 3 inches, apply 3.5-4 inches initially.
Mulch around trees: Keep mulch 3-6 inches away from tree trunks. Piling mulch against the trunk ("volcano mulching") traps moisture against bark, encouraging rot and disease. The mulch ring should extend to the drip line if possible.
What to Do with Your Result
- Compare bulk delivery prices (per cubic yard) versus bagged mulch. Bulk is typically 40-60% cheaper for orders over 2 cubic yards.
- Order 5-10% extra to account for irregular bed shapes and settling.
- Apply mulch in spring after soil has warmed or in fall to insulate plant roots over winter.
- Lay landscape fabric under the mulch for maximum weed suppression in new beds.
